Cars in my ‘hood

Way back when there was still snow on the ground, a board member at one my neighborhood association’s monthly meetings suggested a new addition to the group’s annual summer festival.

I was covering the meeting for the Southwest Journal and though I normally (never) don’t get personally involved in neighborhood board planning, I couldn’t help myself this time.  That’s because board member Tom Alagna suggested hosting a car show in Armatage, blocks from where I live. I promptly offered to help.

Tom and I were both new to car show planning, but hosting the show in coordination with the annual Armatage Summer Festival July 20 ensured that people would be there whether we had one car or 50. Tom was able to secure a few sponsors and after distributing flyers and spreading the word, we found ample interest and an eventual turnout of 23 cars. Not bad for a Tuesday night.

The show was free and we let attendees vote for their favorites. The top picks in guys, gals, kids and board categories went home with trophies. It was laid back and fun for all involved and I hope it happens again next year.
