Pilates home equipment is easy to find! Whether you are creating an at home studio, or just want a few smaller pieces of equipment around for you to exercise with, there are many things to choose from.

The most important piece of Pilates home equipment, and probably the most necessary, is the Pilates Mat. The Pilates Mat will serve for you to do the majority of your Pilates exercises on, supplying you with a space to stretch, do your 34 exercises on, and much more. The Pilates Mat should be thick and to protect your body from the floor when doing exercises.

  •  “A good Pilates mat is at least a half inch thick. I see a lot of thinner mats marketed as Pilates mats, but they are really just yoga cross-over mats.
  • A Pilates mat should also be firm. A mat that is too soft will not support balance and alignment properly.
  • Make sure that the mat is long enough and wide enough. Typical roll up mat lengths are 72" - 86", though I have seen them as short as 56". Widths vary from 21" to 39". There are also folding mats, similar to the kinds of mats found in studios, and those are usually significantly larger, 4' by 8' for example.”  (About.com)

Following a Pilates Mat, another great piece of Pilates Home Equipment is the Fitness ball. Fitness balls may also be known as exercise balls or stability balls, and introduces instability to your normal floor exercises. The Fitness ball works multiple muscles at one time while forcing your body to balance itself. There are many different sizes of fitness balls which can be selected from based on the size of your body or on the particular exercise you are doing. Here is a basic guide: you will want to get a ball 55 cm for someone 4'11" to 5'4", 65 cm for 5'5" to 5'11", and 75 cm for people 6' to 6'7".

Exercise balls are fantastic for Pilates home equipment, and can always be taken elsewhere as well. Exercise balls are inexpensive and easy to blow up and maintain. A good option may even be to own more than one for different exercises or for at home Pilates company.

Prices for Fitness balls range from $10.00-$30.00 and can be purchased at many stores, studios, and as always, online.

Pilates rings, or magic circles are another good option for Pilates home equipment. Small and light weight, they are easily stored, and can always be taken with you whether it be to the office or on vacation. The Pilates ring is a flexible ring, often metal, with padded handles, about 13 inches in diameter. Pilates rings provide resistance and muscle feedback during exercise. Pilates rings are great for toning muscles and supplying feedback from the muscles. Pilates Rings range from $20.00-70.00 and often are packaged with Pilates kits and instructional guides.

Pilates toning balls are another small, inconspicuous piece of Pilates home equipment. Pilates toning balls are weighted rubber balls that fit in the palm of your hand to increase difficulty in exercises. The toning balls also introduce new exercises as well. The balls are one to five pounds and are rated at a difficulty level of three on a scale of one to ten. Not only are toning balls small for Pilates home equipment, but they are extremely diverse. Prices range from $5.00-15.00.

For someone who wants a larger piece of Pilates home equipment, the Reformer is always a fantastic option. The Reformer was originally developed by Joseph Pilates and has since been commercialized. The Reformer is available in many shapes and forms, including traditional wood. Peak Pilates recently developed the Reformer MVe, the first stackable Reformer. Peak Pilates also offers foldable Reformers. Foldable Reformers can be easily folded, moved, and stored by one person, which makes it a great piece of Pilates Home Equipment. Balance products are also a good option for Pilates home equipment. Balance products, such as balance discs and boards develop motor skills and core strength. A variety of exercises are available for balance products, including some of Joseph Pilates original 34 Free Exercises.

The Balance Board is a half sphere which adjusts to three heights, and allows you to work from all angles. The balance board is great for training your body for awareness and is good for rehabilitation of the lower half of the body. Balance Boards range from $65.00-75.00 and is easily stored.

The Balance cushions work your core muscles and are fantastic for people with chronic back pain, or for therapy. The Cushions are inflated with traditional fitness ball needles, and the pressure can be changed for difficulty. Balance cushions range around $25.00.
